There are many ways to use this comforting spice mix. My daughter loves sprinkling it on buttered toast and I love using it as a topping on my gluten-free desserts and baking.

What is a gluten-free cinnamon sugar mix made from?

  • Gluten-free Cinnamon– not all cinnamon is labeled gluten-free. Some are processed on equipment that also processes wheat, so be sure to check the label.
  • Granulated sugar – I use granulated white sugar in this recipe because I like the fine texture and sweet taste. It’s also naturally gluten-free!
  • Salt – I use a pinch of pink Himalayan salt in the spice blend to enhance the overall flavor of the sugary spice. I also like Himalayan pink salt for the added health benefits of the minerals, but table salt will work equally well for this recipe.

Many home cooks and bakers opt for making their cinnamon sugar, not only for its flavor-enhancing abilities but also because it’s a cost-effective choice compared to store-bought options.

This is the mini whisk I use for mixing spice blends – it’s the perfect size and works well to break up the clumps.

The delicious sugar and cinnamon recipe is so simple to make. And it’s gluten-free so it’s Celiac friendly!

You can use it in various dishes when you desire a sweet, aromatic, and slightly spicy flavor. Try it on donuts, churros, pretzels, cinnamon rolls, and more!

And yes, there is a perfect ratio!

The best ratio:

While there is no right or wrong way to have cinnamon-infused sweetness, I prefer a bolder cinnamon taste to enhance the flavors of recipes like my banana Dutch baby pancakes, so I use a 1:4 ratio.

Use this ratio to make 1 cup:

  • Use 1 cup sugar, 4 tablespoons cinnamon, and 1/8 teaspoon salt

If you want to make 1/3 cup, use this ratio:

  • Use 1/3 cup sugar, 4 teaspoons cinnamon, and a pinch of salt

Ratio to make 5 teaspoons:

  • Use 4 teaspoons of sugar, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and a few grains of salt

Use a milder 1:5 ratio (1 teaspoon of cinnamon with 5 teaspoons of sugar) if you’re going to sprinkle the sweet cinnamon blend on toast.

How to store sugar spice mix:

Transfer the sugar and cinnamon mix to a glass or shaker spice jar for convenient use. Make sure to keep it tightly sealed though to prevent clumping. But, if clumping does occur, simply give it a quick stir before using.

Although the spice blend keeps well in the pantry or the refrigerator the cinnamon will lose its potency over time. So, if you haven’t used it in a while, it’s best to make a new batch.
